This listing is for a Repro McCandless/DeForest Spherical Audion Triode Vacuum Tube - Dual Wing. Dual Wing really means that the tube has two plates and two grids. However, the two grids and the two plates are wired together so this is not a twin triode as one might have hoped. I assume this was done to improve current carrying characteristics... This tube is a reproduction. The original design used a Tantalum filament, but was physically unstable. McCandless changed the filament to Tungsten, but Tungsten had lower electron yield compared with Tantalum. Hudson proposed that the filament should be made from Tungsten wrapped with Tantalum to get the best of both metals. DeForest produced tubes of that design primarily for military use. McCandles found the two part filament expensive and cumbersome to make so he introduced the Tungsten filament coated with an organic binder which bound Tantalum to the Tungsten filament.This particular tube is an example of this coated filament tube. This tube is in good cosmetic condition. This is the very last tube of this type I have.Sadly, the filament is open. It still makes a great display piece. This is 100% guaranteed to be as described. I cannot give a comparison to any specification because I do not know what grid bias was used for the the specification. I used -6 volts grid and 65 volts plate, same as the specification for an 01A.
