Icon Audio PS2 Pure Tube Phono Pre-Amplifier. This is a 100% tube phono stage. Zero transistors. It’s an exceptional design — zero hum, full of warmth. It was hand-built March of 2018 in the UK by Icon Audio. Hand-wired point-to-point, no printed circuit boards. I purchased it August of 2018 from Music Direct for $1100. (This model now sells for $1250.) I used it only briefly in 2018 for a series of tests when I was building my own phono stage and comparing different amps on the market. It has less than one week of burn time on it. I have had it in storage since 2018. I just pulled it out and tested it. It still sounds amazing of course -- clear, full, with plenty of gain. Once you drop the needle on a record, you'll immediately notice fluidity, musicality, detail, and pitch-black backgrounds. -- Music Direct website. It really is an amazing phono stage. Note: Two of the three tubes are not the original Russian Electro-Harmonix that came with it. I was doing a lot of tube swapping at the time, and I have lost track of the originals. (If this is a concern for you, you can get a matched pair of 12AX7 Electro-Harmonix tubes on eBay for $55.) It ships double-boxed, with plenty of packing material. Each tube is cleaned and allowed to warm-up for 90 seconds prior to actual testing. Tubes are tested for quality, life, grid emissions and shorts. No tube is offered for sale that tests below the min number given. We also use our Triplett 3413B as a backup tester. Please note that all tube testers are not created equal, and your tester may show a higher or lower test result than our test equipment. All tubes are wrapped in bubble wrap, packed with peanuts and shipped in a sturdy cardboard box to protect it during transit. All antique and vintage radios are cleaned and tested when possible.
