The Pinnacle PN5+is a miniature bookshelf loudspeaker that employs a proprietary Diaduct portdesign to extend its bass response. The optimum duct length and port diameterfor a given bass response are critically related to the bass drivers’scharacteristics and the enclosure’s volume. According to Pinnacle, the use ofan angled duct tube terminating in an oval port on the rear panel permits abass response not otherwise obtainable in a fourth-order vented enclosure ofthe PN5+’s size using the same drivers. The PN5+’s cabinet depth fromspeakerboard to the slightly recessed rear panel is only 6 inches, whichobviously could not accommodate the required 6-inch-long duct in a conventionaldesign. Angling the 1-1/2-inch-diameter tube at 40 degrees to the rear panelenables its length to be increased without obstructing the internal ductopening and the external port to be increased to a 1-1/2 x 2-3/8-inch oval.The PN5 + is atwo-way system whose driver complement consists of a 5-1/4-inchpolycarbonate-cone woofer and a 3/4-inch polycarbonate-dome tweeter cooled anddamped with ferrofluid. The crossover frequency is 5,000 Hz, and the ratedfrequency response is 50 to 21,000 Hz. The nominal impedance of the system is 6ohms, and its rated sensitivity is 86 dB sound-pressure level (SPL) at 1 meterwith a 1-watt input.The PN5+’scabinet measures only 11-1/4 inches high, 6-3/4 inches wide, and 7 inches deepincluding the removable black cloth grille. It is solidly constructed ofhalf-inch particle board covered in walnut-grain vinyl veneer. Weight is 8-1/4pounds. The spring-loaded terminals, which accept the stripped ends of thespeaker wires, are recessed slightly into the back of the cabinet. The speakeris recommended for use with amplifiers delivering between 10 and 50 watts perchannel. Price: $149a pair.At reasonablevolume levels, the PN5 + simply did not sound like a minispeaker. It had asmooth spectral balance, without boom or sizzle, and certainly without aseriously depressed midrange. As might be expected, the speakers could not beplayed at very high levels without sounding strained, but at lower levels theirsound character was amazingly close to that of our reference speakers, whichcost nearly twenty times as much!
