Playback Designs Merlot - discretely built DAC - 230V only Selling a Playback Designs Merlot DAC designed by Andreas Koch. He is the man behind the Super Audio CD (SACD) format that he developed together with Sony in the late 90s. Before that he worked at Studer Revox in Switzerland and in the early 2000s he designed ground-breaking digital converters for EMM Labs in the US.For fifteen years he has been running his own company Playback Designs outside of San Francisco, manufacturing digital converters, streamers and amplifiers. I have spoken to him at the High End Show in Munich and what Andreas Koch does not know about digital technology - its not worth knowing. The Merlot is a discreetly built DAC - that is, there are no IC circuits in the signal chain.The digital conversion is done by a discrete FPGA design that is clocked by Andreas unique clock solution and when the digital signal approaches the outputs it has a sample rate of approximately 50MHz.There are other manufacturers who have tried this solution, but have not succeeded as well as they do not have full control of the entire process.Playback Designs does, and the Merlot DAC creates a very analogue sound with lots of feeling, depth, width and with a transient resolution that doesnt sound digital or harsh. A HiFi colleague summed up the experience well when we compared the Merlot with a couple of other fine HiFi DACs. He said, Merlot removes the edges around the soundstage... And I can agree with that. A sound engineer colleague working at our citys opera house, took a listen to my HiFi-rig and heard some reference music through the Merlot DAC, and his conclusion was: Ive never experienced recorded music this way before... And he records symphony orchestras. The sound experience that I personally think is closest to Playback Designs digital converters are British dCs converters, but then we are talking about a completely different price tag. Both manufacturers converters sound very musical. There is also a really nice headphone amplifier in Merlot which I have enjoyed a lot when I tried different headphones and when I enjoyed music in headphones. It creates control, depth and compliance to the headphone sound in a nice way and I have compared it with several stand-alone headphone amplifiers where I thought the Merlot sounded the best. Merlot can advantageously be fed with sound via a USB connection from your computer. The connection is galvanically isolated so the computers dirty electrical connection does not affect the DAC. Via USB, Merlot can play all sample rates up to 384kHz and Quad DSD (DSDx256). Via S/P-DIF and AES/EBU, it supports sample rate up to 192kHz 24 bit sound. The outputs are both RCA and XLR. The volume knob on the front is for the headphone amplifier and it may be good to know that the Merlot has no volume control on the outputs so it should be connected to a preamp before the output stage. I am the sole owner and the DAC has been used in my non-smoking control room (which will now become a teenage room, hence why I am putting the DAC up for sale). The original box is included (a large wooden wine box, Andreas Koch is a wine lover), so is also the manual. Do note that it support 230V only. Retail price: 9000 euro
