Bellissima coppia di casse passive Bower & Wilkins DM 4 originali e perfettamente funzionanti con numeri di serie consecutivi119363 e 119364 (vedi foto 17 e 18) Di questa coppia di casse sono innamorato e le metto in vendita solo perché dopo mesi di ascolto con grande soddisfazione è tempo di valorizzare altre B&W che ho.Stiamo parlando del 1972,il legno sembra proprio quel legno bello e pesante, inglese come la fabbrica che le ha prodotte e lo stesso il suono che producono che oggi non è non è digitale né moderno, è il suono analogico deli anni 70; se amate gli effetti surround queste casse non fanno per voi Riporto tratti di una recensione del 2019 su tnt-audio.com dove potrete completare la lettura:... i B&W DM4, dove DM sta per “Domestic Monitor”, ovvero una tipologia di diffusore che ambiva a portare in ambito casalingo limpostazione e la qualità dei monitor da studio di registrazione inglesi. Così, nel 1968 fu lanciato sul mercato il piccolo DM1, un diffusore tre vie di dimensioni contenute e prezzo elevato. Quattro anni più tardi, nel 1972, fu commercializzato il modello DM4, che riprendeva le caratteristiche di base del progenitore DM1, portandole a un livello più elevato. Il woofer era interamente realizzato in casa, mentre midrange e tweeter erano di provenienza Celestion e Coles.Il DM4 è un diffusore a tre vie, con un midwoofer con membrana in Bextrene, il DW200/4, progettato e realizzato in casa dalla stessa B&W, un tweeter Celestion HF1300 MkII (utilizzato anche nei mitici BBC LS3/6 e Spendor BC1) più un supertweeter Coles 4001 con cupola in plastica da 19 mm (anche questo montato su Spendor BC1/SP1, IMF, Cambridge R50, B&W DM2 e DM2a)....Il filtro crossover era un Butterworth a 18dB/ottava (tagli a 3,5kHz e 14kHz), mentre la risposta in frequenza dichiarata era estesa da 30 Hz fino a oltre 25 kHz (±2dB). In realtà, come da documentazione ufficiale B&W, le cose in gamma bassa andavano decisamente peggio di così. Infatti la risposta in camera anecoica in asse si fermava a 80Hz-20kHz ±5dB e 140Hz-14kHz entro i classici ±3dB. Limpedenza nominale era 8 ohm, con un minimo tranquillo a 6 ohm (200 Hz) e un picco a 25 ohm (?2000 Hz). Ogni DM4 era misurata in camera anecoica e i grafici di risposta venivano allegati alla documentazione del diffusore.Il carico acustico è una sorta di cassa chiusa “ventilata”, nel senso che linterno del cabinet è ben imbottito di materiale assorbente (anche lana a fibra lunga) e un foro sul frontale (che però non è un vero condotto reflex) consente un migliore controllo dellescursione del cono del midwoofer tra i 60 e i 120Hz. Il cabinet era costituito da pannelli di truciolare di 19 mm di spessore, con strutture di rinforzo interne. I connettori accettano solo banane, non previsto luso di cavo spellato o forcelle.B&W suggeriva lutilizzo di stand di altezza compresa tra 50 e 100 cm, ma secondo me il migliore equilibrio si ottiene con 50 cm, onde evitare di alleggerire troppo la gamma bassa. Il manuale riporta a chiare lettere che i diffusori sono nati per stare su una libreria a contatto con la parete posteriore o addirittura fissati alla parete tramite delle staffe che potevano essere acquistate separatamente (mod. WMK4). Il posizionamento freestanding, tanto in voga oggi, era considerato un problema per B&W, quindi se volete sentire davvero come devono suonare questi diffusori secondo chi li ha progettati...addossateli alla parete posteriore.Linclinazione verso il punto dascolto non è necessaria, a meno che non si posizionino i diffusori molto distanti luno dallaltro. B&W raccomandava di non andare sotto i 2.5 metri e sopra i 4.5 metri.Considerando la curva dellimpedenza, questi DM4 sono un carico amichevole per qualunque amplificatore. E dovevano esserlo, considerate le ridotte capacità di pilotaggio degli amplificatori dellepoca. La sensibilità non è elevatissima, ma con 25/30 watt si riesce a sonorizzare adeguatamente una sala di dimensioni medie. Non esagerate con la potenza, perché il fondo corsa dei woofer è sempre in agguato (e si percepisce con una sorta di click). Lamplificazione potrà essere a valvole o a stato solido, anche vintage, qualora si volesse addolcire un po il carattere monitor di questi diffusori. ConclusioniI B&W DM4 sono diffusori monitor di classica scuola inglese, con tutti i pro e i contro di questa impostazione. Tenuti dentro i loro limiti fisici (che ci sono) riescono a regalare un suono preciso, pulito e di grande fascino, nonostante gli oltre 40(50 ndr) anni di vita. Qualora voleste provare il brivido del vintage di qualità, quello vero, non le porcherie che si cerca di spacciare come tali, questi DM4 potrebbero essere unottima soluzione, visto il costo basso col quale si riescono ancora ad acquistare. Pur essendo un progetto di ben 47(51 nel 2023...) anni fa, stupiscono per la qualità sonora complessiva e affascinano quando suonano classica o jazz, sembra che il tempo sia passato quasi invano. Thus, in 1968 it was launched on the market the small DM1, a three-way loudspeaker of contained dimensions and high price.Four years later, in 1972, the DM4 model was marketed, which resumed the basic characteristics of the DM1 progenitor, bringing them to a higher level.The woofer was entirely made in house, while midrange and tweeter were from Celestion and Coles. Each DM4 was measured in an anechoic chamber and response graphs were attached to the loudspeaker documentationThe acoustic load is a sort of closed “ventilated” box, in the sense that the inside of the cabinet is well padded with absorbent material (even long-fibre wool) and a hole on the front (which however is not a true reflex duct) allows better control of the midwoofer cone excursion between 60 and 120Hz. The cabinet consisted of 19 mm thick chipboard panels, with internal reinforcement structures. Connectors accept bananas only, no stripped wire or spades are intended. B&W suggested the use of stands with a height between 50 and 100 cm, but in my opinion the best balance is obtained with 50 cm, in order to avoid lightening the low range too much. The manual clearly states that the speakers were born to stand on a bookcase in contact with the rear wall or even fixed to the wall using brackets that could be purchased separately (mod. WMK4). Freestanding positioning, so popular today, used to be considered a problem for B&W, so if you want to really hear what these speakers sound like according to who designed them…put them against the back wall. Tilting towards the listening point is not necessary unless the speakers are placed far apart from each other. B&W recommended not going below 2.5m and above 4.5m. Considering the impedance curve, these DM4s are a friendly load for any amp. And they should have been, considering the limited driving capabilities of the amplifiers of the time. Sensitivity is not very high, but with 25/30 watts it is possible to adequately sound a medium-sized room. Dont exaggerate with the power, because the bottom end of the woofers is always lurking (and can be perceived with a sort of click). The amplification can be valve or solid state, even vintage, if you want to sweeten the monitor character of these speakers a bit. ConclusionsThe B&W DM4s are monitor speakers of the classic English school, with all the pros and cons of this setup. Kept within their physical limits (which exist) they manage to give a precise, clean and fascinating sound, despite their more than 40 (50 ed) years of life. If youd like to experience the thrill of quality vintage, the real one, not the crap that people try to pass off as such, these DM4s could be an excellent solution, given the low cost with which they can still be purchased. Despite being a project of 47 (51 in 2023...) years ago, they amaze for the overall sound quality and fascinate when they play classical or jazz, it seems that time has passed almost in vain.
